Mason City, Iowa
YMCA
Located in the industrial part of town, the new YMCA reflected this area in its architectural massing.
It was sited to connect new developments of soccer fields, walking/running paths and an interurban trail with those already in use inside the city.
The running track zippers through the building connecting the parts. We used a "what you see is what you get" architecture, choosing to expose the building materials and hide very little.
The building needed to draw the public out during all parts of the year, hot summers and cold winters. It has done more than that, increasing membership in its first year by 2x. This project received an AIA honor award in Iowa.
*Project completed while Project Architect for Boxwood.
